EMILY SCHUMAN’S DECORATING TIPS
1. Take Advantage of Free Online Layout Resources
If your space doesn’t come with plans, there are some good resources for drawing your own before you start designing your home. As you’re measuring the space, be sure to take into account moldings along the floor, outlet placement, the width of doorways, which way the door opens, and where windows sit, as these factors can dramatically affect the workability of the space. (You also want to be sure that you’ll be able to get your furniture pieces through your door!). Some resources I love: floorplanner.com and roomle.com

2. Little Moments Can Go a Long Way
You don’t necessarily need to do a full-on remodel or furniture overhaul to make a room feel substantially different. Here are some quick fixes:
·         Paint the trim or the ceiling a different color. A simple paint update can make a big difference.
·         Organize cords. This is a tedious task, but it's worth it. A visible tangle of cords can undo all your work in making a room look pulled together.
·         Upgrade outlet covers. If your outlet covers are yellowing, cracked, or covered with old paint, it's time to upgrade.
·         install dimmers. Flattering lighting is everything.
·         Swap lampshades. A standard lamp can get a big makeover by swapping out the shade.

3. Bookshelves Aren’t Just for Books
I like to hang small pieces of art between stacks of books and then add in unexpected objects like a little dinosaur toy to make it more fun. We have a wooden wave that’s actually a kid’s toy, along with various vacation memories, like a Dia de los Muertos diorama from our anniversary trip to Mexico.

4. Greenery can Transform a Space
If there’s an awkward unused corner, or your the room feels like it’s missing something, try investing in some greenery. We love our huge fiddle leaf tree in our dining room and the succulents hanging from the ceiling in our daughter’s room. They’re refreshing and inspiring to look at and are an affordable way to make a formerly unconsidered spot shine.

5. A Well-rounded Space Balances Pricier Staples and Affordable Pieces
One of the biggest lessons I've learned over the years from decorating our house, my first studio apartment, and even my dorm room, is that the cost of creating a visually appealing space adds up quickly. But, there are places that you can save. Think: Brass figurines from the flea market, concert posters, blown-up photographs, or Polaroids made into artwork, furniture from massive discount retailers like Overstock, and smaller details like baskets or decorative elements that don't cost an arm and a leg.

EMILY SCHUMAN’S BIO
Emily Schuman launched Cupcakes and Cashmere in March 2008  as a way to share and encourage others to live a more fulfilling life through fashion, food, beauty, and interior design. Her aspirational yet attainable perspective has connected with an extremely loyal fan base to her site, which has over 5 million pageviews a month. She brings a refined, editorial aspect to everything she creates and inspires her readers through daily content and popular social media channels. In August 2012, she released her first book, Cupcakes and Cashmere: A Guide for Defining Your Style, Reinventing Your Space, and Entertaining with Ease, which became a national bestseller. She released her second book, Cupcakes and Cashmere At Home in May 2015 and followed that with her first clothing line, which launch nationally at Nordstrom and ShopBop in July 2015.

Her media background began at Condé Nast, working at Domino and Teen Vogue magazines, where she learned the importance of journalistic integrity, high quality photographs, and a clean layout - qualities that ultimately became the building blocks for Cupcakes and Cashmere.
