HANDSHAKING

A handshake symbolizes both welcome and good faith, as when business people seal a deal. Either sex may offer their hand first.

A firm, not limp or crunching handshake that is perceptible but not pumping. It is proper to release your grip after a few seconds, especially after the other person releases their grip. If you have a strong grip, adjust to the grip of the other person’s grip.

If you raise your hand and the other person doesn’t respond, lower your hand and forget the handshake, even though offering your hand is correct. You can sense when a handshake is appropriate. If someone has their arms full, of course a handshake is out of the question.

For International rules on handshaking refer to that section, “Basic International Courtesies.”

Sister Parish Design ~ Review

By Susan Bartlett Crater and Libby Cameron
Art by Mita Corsini Bland
St. Martin’s Press, New York, $35.00

By Teresa Hatfield
Author, Splendid Sass

Sister Parish Design, written by Susan Crater, granddaughter of Sister Parish, and Libby Cameron, formerly of Parish-Hadley Associates, is not only a guide to every decorating question, it is personal and beautifully illustrated. The paintings alone, painted by artist Mita Bland, make this book a great buy, but the authors were gracious enough to write an entire book on decorating for beginners and professionals alike.

This is a must have for every savvy individual interested in lovely surroundings. It is a feel good book, leaving it difficult to put down. Thank you ladies, for this beautiful reference book. I would love to have one of these paintings!

Enjoy!

My favorite of course ~ black, white, gray and vermillion red!

Formal Greetings

In certain environments, greetings are more formal and ritualistic. The person's demeanor becomes much less casual.

In business environments, coworkers shake hands and greet each other more casually and treat their bosses with much more deference.

While tone of voice, content of conversation, and posture change in the formal setting, it should not be effusive, but genuine and pleasant.

We will be visiting greetings at home next.

I hope that you have enjoyed this review. I love this book, and intend on having it close at hand.

Private Spaces and Bedrooms

Embracing Etiquette with Teresa continued... see introduction post (1-29-10). Lesson 9 – The greeting.

INFORMAL GREETINGS

Spoken, gestured, or both. It is proper to address with a hello, hi, hey (in some regions) and the person’s name. While young people have their own lingo, THEY MUST PROPERLY ADDRESS those outside of their circles with the traditional greeting.

Always speak to everyone. Do not forget the salespeople, repair people, cashiers, waiters/waitresses, hotel employees, and anyone else you should run into.

Never avoid a greeting because you are in a hurry. If you are in a hurry, just say hello and explain that you are late for an appointment or in a rush.

There are times when a wave or smile in public places such as the theater or restaurant are appropriate, and other times when a greeting should be held until later in the visit if it indicates lack of interest in a speaker or performance.

In the next post we will discuss formal meetings.
