THE ART OF CALLIGRAPHY

It is National Letter Writing Month, and as all of you know, pen and paper are close to my heart. I started the month with a post on the demise of cursive writing.  If you missed the post, you can find it here. Today I would like to focus on calligraphy.  Next Monday, I will be sharing my favorite stationery and accessories.

Who doesn't love to receive a beautiful letter or invitation written and addressed in calligraphy?  This age old art takes things to a new level and lets the recipient know just how special they are to you.

I have dabbled in calligraphy before, but I am now learning copperplate, and I must say I am thoroughly enjoying it.  I have a work space set up, and I work on the strokes and letters as often as possible.

If you are interested in calligraphy, I would suggest finding an instructor nearby or studying online.  There are many online lessons, especially on youtube.  Most helpful for me on everything calligraphy is IAMPETH.  Not only will you find videos and instructions on everything copperplate, including the supplies you will need to get started, the guidelines, and supply sources, but you will also find lessons on other forms of writing. You will need to study the videos as much as you practice writing.  This way, you will not create bad habits early on.

ENJOY the images of the beautiful calligraphy below and get started today!

Teresa, I absolutely love calligraphy and have dabbled in it - what I've learned is that working with pen and ink is tough for me, but when I paint calligraphic letters with watercolor it is a all together different story. It's a thrill to see the letters appear on the paper. Love the samples you've collected here, I am very impressed with the talent of these calligraphy artists! Happy Monday! XOXO

Such a beautiful and ancient way of expressing oneself! This is an art that is even more important today in the age of emails and texts. Lovely post, Teresa!

I love calligraphy. My mom used to do wedding invitations when we were little. Sadly I did not inherit her amazing handwriting

Lovely, lovely lovely...your posts make me so happy and I always love them. I hope to pick up calligraphy this summer if I don't enlarge my garden, or perhaps I'll be super organized and do both.
I've never seen a pen like yours...can you show us more of your work ?
Many thanks lovely Teresa
