Built in 1897, Sullingstead was one of the first homes designed by Edwin Lutyens in the beautiful town Surrey, England. Surrey is only a few miles from London, and if you saw the movie The Holiday, you will be familiar with this little town. I would be embarrassed to tell you how many times I have watched this movie, which happens to be one of my favorites.
The latest owners wanted to restore the home to its natural beauty, hiring Michael Edwards as the architect, and John Minshaw as the interior designer. What resulted was a luscious home abounding in past and present character. ENJOY!
I hope that you have enjoyed this tour!
See you soon,
Teresa

ReplyDeleteJust found your lovely blog and so glad I did since I am totally in LOVE with this house. Love Lutyens - and have you seen the fabulous post on dovecotedecor about her friend's Lutyens inspired house? This house is, as you say, the perfect blending of past and present - haven't bought British House & Garden in a while - guess I should! Thanks for reminding me.
ReplyDeleteThat gray room with the mirrors behind the sofa, gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteLove the mirror paneled wall, but all the images are wonderful!
ReplyDeleteHi: I saw your link at Quintessence. I have a recent post on Lutyens, hope you enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteBest,

Thanks for sharing these photos; it's hard to find British H&G here in Seattle. I'm not 100% convinced by the decoration of this house. I don't think Lutyens would have liked it. His interiors were simpler, somewhat more natural and non-theatrical. He did like black walls with white trim, however, so who knows...
ReplyDeleteOne little detail: Surrey is not a town; it is a county. The house shown here is near a village called Hascombe. The nearest large town is Godalming, also in Surrey, about 2 miles to the northwest.
