SPANX ~ by Sara Blakely

...

In 1998, Sara Blakely cut the feet out of her pantyhose to smooth underneath her cream-colored pair of slacks. This was the beginning of SPANX, one of the most amazing businesses to grace the women in this country, and later worldwide.

Sara received a patent for her idea in 1999 for the footless body shaping pantyhose, and by 2000 had convinced a mill to manufacture her idea. Neiman Marcus agreed to sell the pantyhose, followed by Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue and many other department stores. The rest is history.

In 2000 Sara appeared on the Oprah Show. Oprah named the SPANX pantyhose One of Oprah’s Favorite Things. I guess we all know what that can do for a product. WooHoo!

2001 ~ Sara moved her office from her apartment to Decatur, Ga. She created Fishnet control pantyhose with the no grid butt, and added control top to footless pantyhose (Super Spanx.) THANK YOU Sara!

In 2002 Sara manufactured my favorite of ALL time – the no-band, tummy control mid-thigh hosiery shaper, the maternity footless pantyhose, and the Two-Timin reversible tights called Tight-end Tights. Sara continues to be my hero! In the same year Sara was named Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst and Young. Sara by this time had 11 employees.

SPANX moved their office to Buckhead in 2003. In the same year Sara marketed Topless Trouser socks and Two-Timin reversible trouser socks, All the Way and Mama All the Way to the foot pantyhose, Turbo Tights, Higher Power high waisted tummy control power underwear, Bra-llelujah hosiery bra, and Bod-a-Bing control apparel. WHAT A YEAR!

2004 brought Sara recognition for her accomplishments, and she continued to win awards for her inventions. SPANX gathered a larger sector of the market.

In 2005 unveiled her new line of Hide-n-Sleek and Slim Cognito seamless intimate apparel. She expanded her line to plus-size.

2006 ~ Sara manufactured a less expensive line of under garments under the name of Assets. In the same year, the Sara Blakely Foundation was started, which provides scholarships to college girls. She continued her giving again in 2007.

SPANX, by 2007, had grown to over 50 employees. By 2008 they had grown to 75 employees.

I could go on and on about this talented, hard-working woman and her company, Spanx. There are many new products on the market, including a swim suit line, which I have not listed here. Look for yourself, and see all of her products. I just wanted to bring you to this point in production.

Sara Blakely is an entrepreneur, turning her desire to make women look more beautiful into a major corporation, and at the same time giving so much to those less fortunate. She took her dream and turned it into a reality. Congratulations Sara!

I have worn, and will continue to wear SPANX products as long as Sara and her helpful team will put them on the market. These products are MIRACLE WORKERS. Ask any woman who wears them to give them up and see what happens. NOT!

You can visit Sara at the address below.

GREETINGS AND INTRODUCTIONS

This chapter is on greeting and introducing yourself to others. In this chapter we will be introduced to these courtesies and repercussions.
The Essentials of Greeting Others

An acknowledgement of someone else’s presence. It is an ingrained habit for most to say hello, but when you omit this act, feelings can be hurt. Most omission are usually due to preoccupation, but must be corrected on next meeting.

In next post, we will discuss informal greetings.

See you soon,
Teresa

~~~~~~~~~
I would like to share with you a blog that I am truly fond of, A Gift Wrapped Life.
I don't recommend many blogs, but this one is different. I believe you will find it enjoyable. Not only is it beautiful, the author is writing an important series that I have enjoyed reading.
Actions Express Attitudes
Paying attention to others, being empathetic and listening is of utmost important. Self-concern has no place when others are uncomfortable or expressing a bad situation they are enduring.
Flexibility is also very important. Courteous people aren’t as concerned with form, such as which fork should be used, when it will embarrass a person. The mistakes of others are no excuse to be cruel.
I hope that you have enjoyed this post.
See you soon,
Teresa
Jan Showers ~ Glamorous Rooms Part I
,
Glamorous Rooms
Glamorous Rooms
By Jan Showers
Abrams, New York, $50.00
By Teresa Hatfield
Author, Splendid Sass
Each year, only a few really marvelous books on home décor are published, and even fewer of those books deserve to adorn the collection of those desiring true professional advice on home décor. This lovely book has earned that place.
Jan Showers is no stranger to the design world, and her talent is enormously evident in this book. Hats off to this talented and devoted decorator for such a beautiful work of art.
Jan Showers has always been my go-to for decorating advice, so it should be no surprise that I have decided to add her new book, Glamorous Rooms, to my collection. Elegance and clean lines define Showers work, and I am certain that you will enjoy my synopsis of this beautiful book.
The actual cloth cover.
These two photographs are from the same entryway.
Embracing Etiquette with Teresa
continued... see introduction post (1-29-10). Lesson 5 – The Basics
Four Things Etiquette is Not
1. A set of rigid rules.
Manners change with the times. It is a set of guidelines to make people feel comfortable.
2. Something for the wealthy or well-born.
Ettiquette is a CODE OF BEHAVIOR for everyone.
3. A thing of the past.
Etiquette is as important today as it has ever been.
4. Snobbishness.
Pretentiousness violates all rules of etiquette. Those looking down on others appear lower class..
If you missed the last post on the project, be sure to go back and review.
Part II of Jan Showers tomorrow.
David Hicks Part III ~ The Gardens
...
Me After This Week!
It has been a crazy month for me. I have had the flu which turned into a sinus infection which caused me to miss school. I have been getting caught up and finishing many projects that I have been putting off such as painting and gilding a headboard and footboard, gilding a nativity scene, finishing olive oil bottles (stopper project to follow soon), starting an oil painting and finishing the planter and terra cotta pots.
Below, I have posted the photographs of a few of the gardens that David Hicks designed, a preview of Jan Showers (which will be in three parts), instructions for the planter (herbs and flowers), and the Embracing Etiquette with Teresa post. There will also be a post on Sister Parish Design.
This should be enough for the weekend. I have a lot in store for you this coming week!
ENJOY!
DAVID HICKS
Jan Showers ~ Book Review to follow in next three posts!
Projects...
Photographs to follow instructions.
Instructions for plant box and flower pots:
I purchased small/medium terra cotta pots and painted them with blackboard paint. No need to paint inside of pots.
For plant/flower box, I purchased a 2 x 8 x 16 board. You may want a lighter box. If so, buy 1 x 8 x at least 11 feet. You will only need 11 feet, but it may be difficult to find a shorter board with these dimentions. The gentleman at
Lowe’s cut it for me.
You will need to have it cut into 5 pieces.
3 @ 3 feet and 2 @ 1 foot.
Package of at least 8 screws. 3 inch for 2 inch board and 1 ½ inch for 1 inch board.
See photos below. All boards must be flat on ground.
Drill holes smaller than screw and then screw in.
Paint desired color on the outside.
You may want to line, but I drill holes in the bottom and put on top of wood planks.
Have fun. I will begin work of the herb garden in 2 weeks!
Two Other Essential Qualities ~ Graciousness and Deference.
Graciousness is the ability of a person to make someone feel comfortable and to relieve them of embarrassment. The book uses the example of assuring a person that forgets your name that they are not alone in forgetting names or details.
Defererce is the recognition of a person’s experience and accomplishments. Seniority, removing a hat when inside, addressing a person by Mr. and Mrs., etc.
See you Monday!
