Gun control issues have been at the forefront for a very long time.  There are some that believe there should be some changes made to provide a way to keep guns out of the hands of violent criminals.  This is not going to happen, because the bad guys will always find a way to get the guns they want.  If you believe otherwise, you are in denial.

In the Second Amendment to the Constitution, the law reads: "A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."  Short and simple.  This is the law.  Period.

GUNS DO NOT KILL, PEOPLE DO. I am beyond tired of reading and hearing that we have got to do away with guns.  Owning a gun is our constitutional right, and you aren't going to take guns away from law abiding citizens in America.  It is not going to happen, and it shouldn't. People have a right to protect themselves from violent offenders, especially in today's climate.

I, on the other hand, do believe changes need to be made. Over half of the gun related deaths in America are suicide, The majority of the rest are violent crimes, with around 3 percent being accidental.

For once I agree with this administration on something. We are going to have to address the subject of mental illness.  I believe a group of professionals should be put in place to come up with some recommendations and rational solutions to lowering the number of suicides and violent crimes committed by mentally ill individuals without unfair targeting, which is a major concern.  This process will be time consuming, so we will need to go ahead and pass laws on other issues.

I also believe that more restrictions should be put on weapons sold at gun shows.  This is a no-brainer. I believe, just as most Americans do, that background checks are necessary.  Hopefully a more efficient and less time consuming system can be put into place.

We should not only be able to own a gun, we should be able to carry a concealed weapon. I will not change my mind on this and neither will most Americans.

I hope that Congress can get together and pass laws.  The ridiculous sit-in, a political stunt, is no way to get anything done, and neither is acting like children by a majority of congressional leaders. We should all write or contact our leaders and let them know our thoughts on the issue. They do work for us, and are paid by taxes from working people like ourselves.

So let's stop the marches, protests, and ridiculous rhetoric, and get things done.  We all want a safer America.

When I started writing this post, I researched numerous sites. I just kept coming up with the same numbers and percentages, and of course the same arguments from different groups. Everything else is common sense.

A note: the AR-15 rifle, below, is not an assault weapon.  There is so much confusion on this weapon.

Excellent and well thought out always. I agree with everything you say. One caveat though, and I am not 100% when it happened or if I am correct. But the original text of the 2nd amendment does not have the comma after militia as far as I remember. When we were growing up, we were taught...."A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." Without the comma, it is much clearer. It means....a free state, meaning country, will have a well regulated militia (military) and because of that, the right of the People (meaning citizens) to keep and bear arms shall not be taken the State. God Bless These United States!!!

I found the version you are speaking of and it makes sense! Thank you!

When the founding fathers wrote about the right to bear arms, they had muskets not assault weapons. Anyone who doesn't believe that having a society that makes it so easy to get their hands on guns isn't going to make it appealing for terrorists is kidding themselves. Really liked your blog but feel you should have established a separate political blog that people who are interested could follow. Sorry you lost me with this last gun control or lack thereof statements.

While I may not agree with some of your beliefs, I salute your courage in standing up for your convictions. May I also respectfully suggest that because these issues are so complicated that you post more than one post on each. It might also be interesting if you could interview someone on the opposing side, and then have a rebuttal of sorts.

Teresa, I so agree with you on every point. Our Constitutional Rights are so important. The Second Amendment is essential to all Americans and I just wish we all realized this point. History proves what happens when guns are removed from the populace. Guns are typically removed before a “dictator” makes his move. This should scare all of us! Check out dictators and Supreme leaders such as Mussolini and Hitler who took the guns and banned them. The people had no way to defend themselves so posed no threat any longer. I have talked to many who say problems as we have here in the US with our suicides and gun battles don’t happen in Europe where guns are not carried. WRONG! I lived in Europe for several years and know they have actually more problems than we do but we don’t hear about the incidents over here. Scandinavian countries have the worst suicidal rates and rape. German women fear for their lives. Wake up America! We can still be a peace loving nation if we commit to keeping our Constitutional Rights! Without the Constitution we are no better than anyone else and totally will fail as a Nation! It is our Constitution that sets us apart and makes us strong.
As you say though, we do need stronger laws to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill and subversives. Hard to do that affectively but it must be done. So Congress, get working! Also, we are now facing guns being permitted on college campuses. Now what could go wrong there? Our youth are living on their own for the first time. A little too much alcohol or bullying, etc. is not good with guns in hand. Suicidal rates amongst our college young people is at an all-time high for many have little coping skills in today’s world.
